He Was............

He was 6'5, he was gruff, he told you exactly what he thought and didn't bat an eye, he liked his beer, Louis L'amour books, and John Wayne movies.  He drove a truck and had some keen sense of direction as he hardly ever needed to look at a map.

He loved being with his brothers and sisters, playing cards and dominoes. He loved country music, and I mean the real country music, he loved watching sports (used to drive my mother crazy).

I remember riding on his shoulders, dancing on his feet, and him singing silly songs to me.

He was far from perfect, but he was....My Dad.

Into Everyone's Life a Little Rain Must Fall.

We all like things to go smooth as silk, but we all know that into everyone's life a little rain must fall.

Sometimes this rain feels like a downpour and you think you may drown, but when the sun shines again (and it will) you find that you have grown and become a stronger person because of it.  For without the rain, the Rose would not bloom.

I have Faith that God is not finished with me yet, and just like the rose in my flowerbed I will bloom after the rain!

We All Have Dreams

Everyone has dreams, as children we dream of being Doctors, Lawyers, Firefighters, or Teachers.  As we grow older many of us dream for owning a home, becoming financially stable, and some of us dream of being  famous.

All of the Handmade Artists at Handmade Circle Team have dreams as well, I am excited to share with everyone the hopes and dreams of Handmade Circle:

Holly's Homemade Goodies will dream big this year....I hope to continue to have a successful small business. I would like to increase my inventory so I may sell at craft fairs in the near future. I am currently working on new quilt patterns so I may offer my customer's more of a variety in styles of quilts to chose from. I would also like to double my sales from last year.

Whispering Metalworks has a dream. And we hope that someday this dream will become reality. Our goal...hopefully fairly short term...is to continue to grow our business enough that my over the road truck driving husband can quit his job and focus on the business. He works so very hard, and it takes a huge toll on both he and our family. He and I are absolutely partners in our business... maybe short term he would leave his trucking job and work part time at the business and part time at a local driving job. But ultimately we hope to have our business expand into a store front and have it fully sustain our family expenses!

Camermaid Jewelry - My personal dream is that my little Etsy shop will continue to grow and prosper to the extent that it provides my family with a real income! I hope that sustainable practices such as buying local and handmade continues to grow and folks look for more quality, opposed to quantity.

Star Jewels - My dream is to continue growing my business and sales revenue quickly. I plan to at least double and hopefully triple my revenue from last year in 2013. I have a plan, I know exactly how to make it happen, and I am confident it will!

Baby Girl's Creations - My dream is to continue creating and succeed so that this will become my full time job.

Artisticsoul Designs - My dream for 2013 is to keep growing and moving my business forward. Create and cultivate relationships online and in person that support my shop and product lines. I have a lot of irons in the fire and I hope to see them develop throughout this year.

Twiggy & Opal - My dream is for my daughter to finally find happiness in her personal life and creativity side and for my son to reach for the stars!

Cutterstone Jewelry - My dream is to move out of state, to a place where my husband will be able to fulfill HIS dream to open his own shop! It would be fantastic to work together full-time and feel like a REAL business. Although Etsy does provide more than we expected to receive, we do want to increase our inventory and build a good customer base.

Toppy Toppy Knits - My dream for 2013 is to expand my business, I'm trying to keep it growing, I need a good income.
Besides I hope I can find a real job, (working from home) again.

Gaga Gems - My dream is to become successful enough selling my jewelry so that when I retire I have something to keep me busy and generate a little income. Retirement is a while yet so I have time I just need to stay focused.

The Happy Mushroom - My dream is to find a patch of land in the wilderness (not a lot of that left in the UK!) where we can build a tiny little house from natural materials without having to worry about planning laws (they are ridiculous here) and where we can have peace and freedom to do what we want away from the noisy modern world. A tiny house with a great big studio workshop outside to create beautiful things. With a tiny well insulated house and a little vegetable garden, maybe a few chickens, we wouldn't need much money so we could create just for fun, selling what we wanted without having to worry about productivity.

Doodlebug's Treasures -  My dream is that our business can generate enough income that my hubby doesnt have to work at dead end jobs until we graduate with our bachelors degree in two years.

ifrogcrafts - My original dream was that i could do my creating full time & not have to "work". My wonderful hubby has made that possible. My new dream is to have a craft mall where the rental spaces are reasonably priced, or maybe organize a co-op store in this area.
<><

The Prismatic Peacock - My hope for 2013 is to continue to grow and expand my business. My goal is to obtain at least three new local stores to carry my products, to triple my Etsy sales, and to invest in SEO to increase my online visibility. My dream is that The Prismatic Peacock will take flight and provide my family with a steady income and allow me to continue to nurture my creativity and love of color and fragrance.

Sassy Girl Headbands - My hope for 2013 is for Sassygirl to grow enough to let me drop a day at my "real job" to be home with my girls more. I do love my real job  I would also like to learn more about sewing and be able to make more than just headbands! All a work in progress!

Terri Jean's Adrornments - For my business/shop to be successful. However, my longtime dream has been to go to Egypt!

BMaja - Success for my shop and for me to visit Cuba

And As for me at Bags By Hags - My dream is for a cure for dementia to be found and that my Mother has a good year and enjoys her Golden years.  To enjoy every second possible with my Grandchildren and watch them grow and learn.  For my family to be healthy and prosperous.  For everyone on the Handmade Circle Team to see their dreams come true, and finally for my own little shop to grow and prosper through the year.

What is your Dream?   Whatever it is, Dream big, and NEVER give up on your Dream!

Time Marches On......

Time - how it does march on!  It's hard to believe that Summer is winding down, the kids are back in school and before we know Christmas will be here!

Labor Day Weekend always finds me reminiscing about some of the most happiest moments of my childhood.  We always made the trek to Turkey Texas or Washington Oklahoma for the Collins Family Reunion.  This was all my dad's family.  They loved getting together, laughing and talking, playing cards and dominoes.  I remember playing with my cousins, the wonderful food, and being smothered my Aunt Agatha's kisses.  And of course there was the big bet between my dad and cousin Michael Collins, $100.00 on who was going to win on Texas-OU Weekend.  My mother would get so mad that daddy would bet that much money ($100.00) was a lot of money then!  I love all these wonderful memories!

Now time marches on, all my dad's siblings have passed and we no longer have the Collins Family Reunion.  I often wonder where all my cousins are, what is going on in their lives now, and if they have the same fond memories like I do.  Oh and Michael Collins - Texas will beat Oklahoma this year!

What Were You Doing 35 Years Ago?

Today I find myself wondering, how in the heck did 35 years past so fast?

I remember August 16, 1977 just like it was yesterday, my mom was 9 months pregnant with my little brother, we were staying with my sister in Burleson in order for mom to be close to the hospital.  I can still see her sitting on the couch in this orange maternity dress with her feet propped up.  The Ice Cream Man was coming down the street, she sent me out to get her an ice cream, when I came back inside with her ice cream she was crying hysterically, Elvis Presley had died.

So much has changed in those 35 years, that baby (who was born on August 19, 1977) is now an Investigator for the Sheriff's Department, married with a 6 year old daughter and a new baby due in October.  I am now the Head Hag of Bags By Hags who still loves to listen to Elvis as I sew in my workshop. As for Mom, she now lives with me, I had to tell her what today was (bless her heart) she still loves ice cream, but thankfully there is no Ice Cream Truck out where I live, I am a little old to be running down the street waving money!  She gets her ice cream from the grocery store these days.  She still loves Elvis and that baby boy?  Heavens he is her favorite!

Laughter is Good for the Soul......

Trying to build a successful business is a serious matter, it's hard work and we are all just trying our hardest to be a success.  Handmade Circle Team has been working very hard on our Christmas In July sale, but I find it very important that we should all take the time to enjoy some laughter each day.

This month we have held a weekly trivia contest, with the winner being the featured artist on our FA-LA-LA Friday Blog.  Today as I was checking the answers to announce our winner later this afternoon, I got the best laugh I have had all week.  I am going to share and hope you get a good chuckle as well!

Kathy Porter Koontz of Flowertown Originals gave the following answers:

  1. St. Nick's nose is often compared to what fruit? -  a tomato...wait, is that a fruit or a vegetable?
  2. Catch me if you can" was said by whom? - Bigfoot
  3. In "Jingle Bell Rock" everyone is dancing and prancing, where do they do it? - trick question, those are 2 of Santa's reindeer
  4. There are 365 days in a year, what number is Christmas Day? - Christmas is #1
  5. Who said, "God Bless Us, Every One"?  - I think I've said someting like that once, in a certain tone of voice.

One thing I love the most about being part of the Handmade Circle Team is the laughter we all share in our group.

But Kathy is serious when it comes to her creating and her shop! She has some great items! One of my favorite is this Polymer Clay Ring . Right now you can save 15% in her shop with Coupon HMCJULY

Check out all the great shops participating in Christmas In July, you won't find Bigfoot but you will find some great items at a great price! http://bagsbyhags.blogspot.com/p/hmc-christmas-in-july.html

The Dance.......

Looking back on the memory of the dance we shared neath the stars above.......

I have come a long way, going through some old pictures recently I am amazed at how much my life has changed and how far my journey has come.  I wanted to share some of the moments before I was:
 Bags By Hags

Long Before Bags By Hags

Daddy was a Truck Driver we used to get to go on the road with him in the Summer, we were on the way to Bangor, Maine. (Mom, Dad, and little Brother)

This is my little brother Wesley, we laugh at this photo as he is now an Investigator for the Sheriff's Department so he dresses like this everyday- minus the pajamas!

A family portrait from years ago one of very favorites!

Tombstone Arizona with my sister Janet

The day my Soldier graduated from A.I.T.

Before I was Bags By Hags I was 911 what is your Emergency?

I could have missed some pain, but I would have had to miss the "Dance"
I hope when you look back through your photos you realize you enjoyed your dance on your journey to your own dreams.

Precious Memories

Handmade Circle Team is celebrating Christmas in July, this got to me to thinking about some of my most precious Christmas time memories:

  • Being no more than 5 or 6 and standing on a chair beside my Grandmother as she was making a homemade chocolate pie and her letting me taste test the chocolate.
  • Listening to my dad sing "Jingle Bell Rock" his favorite Christmas Carol, I can still see him patting his leg to the beat of the music.
  • The wonder of a little curly headed 3 year old boy (Who is now grown with children of his own) playing with his Marching Mickey Mouse.
  • In 1975 my Papaw holding the baby doll I got for Christmas.
  • Fast forward to 2000 and seeing the joy on my own daughters face on Christmas Morning
  • 2005 Our Christmas Family Photo

Christmas Memories some of my most precious memories of all.  What are some of your Christmas Memories? I would love it if you shared.

Another way to make this Christmas memorable is by shopping our Christmas in July Sale. 10%-30% off beautiful Handmade Items that those on your gift list will sure to remember for years to come!

Texas Heat, Texas Earthquakes, and a Texas Sized Sale!

Here at Bags By Hags it was a hot, shaky, and busy weekend!

Last year we broke records for the heat we had, it was just miserable so when June started off somewhat cool by Texas standards, I thought oh maybe we are going to have a pretty mild Summer this year.  Well yesterday the 100 degree temperatures returned.  Looks like Summer is sitting in.

My sister's Guinea Bird, cooling off as she waters her yard.  She can walk out into the yard and call here Guinea Bird and here she comes running!

Yesterday morning we experienced a little shake, rattle, and roll!  Earthquake hit very close to our house, we heard a loud boom, then the house started shaking! We all just froze and looked at each other.  It was a 3.4 according to the news. Not a big one, but big enough for us in Texas who are not used to them!  Not sure why we are having them now but for the past couple of weeks they have been hitting close to our home. I was born and raised here, I expect the heat, have been through a couple of tornadoes, but I sure don't know how to deal with these little ground shakers!

I did take some time off yesterday to go down to visit my daughter and 3 grandchildren.
First up is Anna and my Mom. Anna loves her great grandmother!
Then we have Miss Nattie Jo, her and her blanket, she is like Linus!
I was unable to get a good shot of Baby Tanith, but I promise you she is cute as a button, giggling, and growing like a weed.

My husband then drove me over to my childhood home, we lived here from the time I was about Miss Anna's age until I started 4th grade.  The old place is falling down, I just stood and looked, but in my heart I could hear laughing children, and feel the love that once made this house a home.  My husband took a couple of board from the house. He is going to make me a cross out of the wood, which I think is awesome!

I have also been very busy getting ready for the Handmade Circle Team Christmas in July Sale.  This is going to be a wonderful event!  We have some great things planned including some fun with our Blogs, and I am working on a great raffle!  You don't want to miss this awesome sale.  We have so many great shops signed up.  You can see them all here:

Have a great evening everyone!!

Who Are The People In Your Neighborhood?

Remember that song from the Mr. Rogers Show?

I actually live out in the country but I do have a few neighbors, all very friendly and we watch out for each other. (Okay so my next door neighbors are my sister and her friend, but hey they are great neighbors!)

Because I take care of my Mom, I don't leave the house much, except for my afternoon strolls, my favorite time of day is right at sunset and I like to get outside and get some fresh air.  You never know what you may encounter.  Here are a few things I discovered while out for a stroll yesterday:

Kim and Tina Waving at me as I start out on my stroll!

Beautiful Flowers along the way, but watch out for the Bees!
Pony Boy - He lives across the street, He is the sweetest dog!
Honee Girl, one of my sister's dogs, she thinks she is a show dog!

I learned a long time ago that something as simple as a late afternoon stroll can be the biggest blessing! The little things in life mean the most!

So I challenge you to take a little a walk around your neighborhood, I would love to see what you discover!

Of course feel free to stroll on over to our Shop as well, you will for sure discover some unique items at a great price!

It Was A Wild Night......

What a difference a few years makes, several years ago if I said "It was a wild night" that usually would mean  a night of partying it up!  Oh how time changes us all. Last night was a wild night but it sure wasn't due to partying!

2:00 am:  Loud boom and we are shaken out of our bed!  What the heck was that? Was that thunder? (we did have storms moving in from the West).  Doc and Ringo my two Boston's are going crazy barking and very upset.   Get up open up the front door see my neighbors out with a flashlight also trying to figure out what the heck it was.  Come to find out this morning we had an Earthquake!  I was used to them while we were living in Alaska, had them all the time, but you never think about them in Texas!  Finally get situated and back in the bed.

5:00 am:  I am awakened by one tiny Chihuahua sitting on my head crying and panting, about that time Boom! I thought not again, but this time the lightening followed, the storms had arrived.  So I am up again for a bit with a scared little dog.  Finally get back to bed and back to sleep about 6:00 am.

I am looking forward to a nice calm peaceful night tonight.  These days about as wild as I get is sewing up some wild animal print, like this Eyeglass Case.

Go wild this weekend and have a great time!  As for me, I am hoping for a tame one!

Bookmarking The Pages Of Your Life......

Don't you wish that sometimes our lives could be like our computers? Where we could bookmark all the favorite moments of our lives, and then when you are having a bad day just click on one of your bookmarks and you would be taken back to that page in your life in an instant?

Of course we all have photos we can look back on and memories in our hearts and minds, but sometimes I wish just for once to go back and re-live some of those wonderful times just to relish in the moment one more time.  As we get older we sometimes lose the ability to remember some of those things (this is all too familiar for me as a care for a mother with Dementia), I would encourage everyone to keep a journal along with those photos so your children and grandchildren can also share your wonderful memories.

I am also introducing Bookmarks into my Shop:  These are very affordable and will help you bookmark your favorite verses of the Bible, or whatever book you are reading at the time.

These also make great little gifts!  You can see more information here.

ENJOY THE LITTLE MOMENTS IN LIFE, THEY MAY JUST END UP BEING ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE BOOKMARKS!

My Favorite Memories.....

Today would have been my Dad's 83rd Birthday. Dad passed away in January of 1989, I wish he were still here to see all his grandchildren and great grandchildren.  I miss him but I have some wonderful memories...

  • Dad was 6'5, I remember riding on his shoulders and feeling like I was on top of the world.
  • Dancing on his feet.
  • Dad was a Truck Driver, I have been all over the United States, we used to get to go with him in the Summer time.  I loved sitting on the Doghouse in the truck and my favorite time was driving at night.
  • We never had much money but he managed to take us to see all the Disney Movies, and the John Wayne movies. And we went to the Fort Worth Stock Show every year.
  • He was the baby of 12 children and all his brothers and sisters got together every year over the Labor Day Weekend.  Daddy loved spending time with his family.  I have such wonderful memories of those Family Reunions.
Losing your loved ones is a hard thing, but by the Grace of God the tears turn to smiles as you focus on those wonderful memories and the love that lives in your heart for the rest of your life.

Happy Birthday Daddy!

A Special Day......

Today is a special day, it is my best friend's (who happens to also be my sister) birthday!  She is my rock, I can tell her anything, she is Bags By Hags biggest supporter, and I Love her Moon and Stars!

We have been through so much together, from her holding my hand and supporting me through my husband's deployment to Iraq, to sledding in Alaska (we almost died going down that hill!) to now us taking care of Mom in her golden years, and keeping me laughing on those difficult days.

Happy Birthday Kimmee, God sure blessed me! I Love You So Very Much!!!♥♥♥

THROUGH THE YEARS:

Taken years ago at the Fort Worth Stock Show.
The State Fair of Texas sometime in the 70's
The House where we grew up, so many memories.....

Nothing better than Sister Hugs!

She wrote me this when I was living in Alaska, now we live next door to each other and right back at you Kimmee!  HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Keeping Your Sense Of Humor.....

Trying to have a successful business is serious stuff.  I am working so very hard to make Bags By Hags  a success, it is my dream - My Handmade Dream.  However I firmly believe you should keep your sense of humor, how can you go through the day without lightening up and laughing a bit? Especially at yourself sometimes.

Children know all about laughing and playing (we could learn a lot from children) this is my middle granddaughter Anna.  She is such a little cut up always giggling and laughing, yesterday she decided to put the strainer on her head to look through the holes and giggle.
I laughed and laughed at this photo, laughter is good for our soul!

Sewing is also something that soothes my soul, I love to design and create unique items, yesterday I took a lightweight denim jumper, designed a tote bag and came up with this.
This is my Americana Tote perfect for the Summer!

I hope you do something today that soothes your soul, especially laugh!  I know I will be going back to look at that picture of my granddaughter to get me a good giggle for days to come!

Getting Stopped in My Tracks.......

As most of you know in addition to running my business Bags By Hags I also take care of my mom who has dementia.  Some days are smooth as silk, some days are as a bumpy as a country dirt road.  But I have faith this is what I am supposed to be doing and the Good Lord will help through!

This morning in between picking up fabric that my little monsters stole out of my scrap box, dealing with a small chihuahua who is barking as I am sweeping the floor, my mom decides she cannot find any of her clothes.  I ask her what are you looking for? What do you want to wear today? I want my pants like yours (I am wearing black yoga pants) Mom they are in your basket in your room, so I go get them.  Start back with my chores and she says will you fix my hair like yours? (Mine is tossed up in a ponytail) So I stop again and fix her hair for her.  I turn around and she says am I as pretty as you are now?  Oh Mama you are much prettier I tell her!  Funny how when you are so busy trying to get stuff done something so simple can stop you in your tracks.  Yes, this is what I am supposed to be doing........ (Now if I can just find where she put her glasses......)

I was also out in the garage changing out my laundry and noticed the little squirrel that has been around for the past few days, I quietly came in and grabbed my camera to take a few pictures.  As you can see he is just like me busy about his business but I was able to get a couple of shots. What an awesome sight for me!

You just never know what is around each corner of the day, it may just be something that will stop you in your tracks and make you thankful for all that you have!

What I Love About Texas......

Everyone is proud of where they come from, their hometowns, and their home states no matter where the may end up living in their life.  I was born and raised in Texas, I love it here!  The whole time we were in Alaska (which is a beautiful place and I met some wonderful people who I am proud to have as friends) I missed home, my family, where I came from.

I love where I live, I love small town, and I love slow pace.  I also love the little things in life, to quote a line from Robert Duvall's character "Gus" - from one of my favorite movies Lonesome Dove, " Learn to enjoy all the little things in life, like a sip of a good whiskey of a evening, a soft bed, a glass of buttermilk, or a feisty gentleman as myself"

Here are the little things I enjoy and love about Texas and where I live:

A beautiful Texas Sunset
Trumpet Vine starting to bloom
Kim and Tina's dogs who greet you at the door - Duchess, Little Girl, and Honee Girl
The Guinea Bird that Lives at Kim and Tina's (Love to hear them)
Slow Pace
Wild Sunflowers starting to bloom
God's Glory at it's finest!

Hope you enjoy all the little things, wishing you a Blessed Sunday, and a great week ahead!♥

Moments of Memories.......

It's funny how certain things in our daily life will trigger a certain memory.  Music does this for some people so do certain smells and that is what happened to me yesterday.

I was busy working on a new apron for my shop, I was ironing the pieces for the waistband and ties and had to use a little spray starch.  The smell of that starch immediately made me think of my Grandmother.  Memaw as she was known to me, I loved her to the moon and back and would stay with her every chance I got.  Just that little burst of scent took me back to when I was child happily playing in her kitchen as she was doing her ironing. Something I hadn't thought about in such a long time.  It was a wonderful feeling and made me smile, such a blessing to me.

This was taken at Christmas in 1988, Memaw and some of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The little girl leaning up against her- My daughter who is now all grown up with 3 children of her own.

I was able to sail right on through making my new apron with such a smile on my face. Memaw would be proud I believe, she could sew anything!

The body of the apron is made from a vinyl recycled tablecloth, perfect for using while working in the garden  as you can just take a damp cloth to wipe the dirt off the apron body.  You can read all about my latest apron here.

I now have 3 grandchildren of my own, I hope when they grow up something so simple will trigger a good memory of them playing happily at Nona's house.  As I love them to the Moon and Back just like I loved Memaw and she loved me!

Dog, Cat, or Family Member?

If you follow my blog you have seen the pictures of my animals, I love my animals, they are part of my family.  My animals are very spoiled, well loved, and well taken care of.

Sadly that is not true of all animals and I saw this first hand when I worked for Animal Control in Alaska. Some days I would just come home and cry, there just aren't enough homes for all the unwanted animals and you have to realize that you cannot save them all no matter how much you want to.

We happened to find baby kittens living in our shed and managed to capture them, poor little things they were so hungry and thirsty.  The mama cat belonged to one of our neighbors so my husband took the kittens to them and thankfully they said they would take them.  I really wish they would spay mom.......

This is what a tough life my animals lead:
Ringo - You know I love him he is allowed to sleep on my John Wayne Blanket!
Doc - Yes again I allow him to sleep up in the chair.
Little Man - Sits here everyday and watches out the window for my husband to come home, he is Troy's dog!

Ruby - Little Ruby laying on the Dog Bed at my feet.

Miss Kitty - She is waiting on me, she sits in the chair behind me when I'm on the computer (when she is not sitting up on the desk) she is ready to go to the workshop with me!

I wonder if they even know how lucky they really are?

I have a couple of great items in my shop for pet lovers out there, first up is our Puppy Love Tote
A great tote made from recycled denim, and a great bargain!

For the Cat lovers out there, its Cat's Galore
This is one of my favorite tie purses in my shop

I hope you have Dog-gone great day and a Purrfect weekend!
